Lightbulbs shuddered, and instruments trembled at the screech of a thousand fruit bats on sunrise. It was sirens battling with dolphins in a sonar war for supremacy over a stretch of sea. Wet plastic scraped down a dry window in pursuit of that polished shine. But worse.

Then it stopped.

He rubbed palms against his tortured ears at the violence spilled from such a small mouth. ‘How are you still smiling?’

His seated companion removed his earplugs. ‘Don’t worry, you’ll soon learn who the screamers are. Welcome to the school choir auditions. Thank you, Jenny. Next.’
